Nicholls State UniversityNicholls State University has strong programs in alternate energy sources and energy management and conservation. Nicholls State University is an undergraduate institution with select masters and specialist programs. The research program is funded by USDA, DOE, NOAA, EPA, NIH, LABoR, USGS, BP America Oil Corporation, and by US Sea grant. Nicholls has a strong and well-established program in energy research from biomass specifically agricultural residue. Dr.Raj Boopathy leads the research in this area with many supporting staff including many graduate students. Nicholls will play a key role in the consortium in leading the energy research from alternative sources.

  • Development of alternate methods for open air sugarcane burning.
  • In-situ composting of post-harvest sugarcane residue.
  • Fuel alcohol production from sugarcane biomass.
  • Use of agricultural residue in hydrogen production.
  • Optimization of methods for maximum production of ethanol from sugarcane leaf.
  • Identification of microorganisms for fermentation of sugarcane waste.


At Nicholls State University, we conduct basic and applied research on energy production from biomass especially from post-harvest agricultural residue.  Currently we are working on generating fuel grade ethanol from post-harvest sugarcane residue.  The preliminary results are very promising and future work will focus on optimization and scaling up the process for large-scale production.
